Biologists have documented a rare case of a frog (or toad) whose eyes developed inside the roof of its mouth rather than in their usual positions—which likely results from a macromutation (a major developmental mutation) rather than typical variation. The specimen was reportedly found in Ontario, Canada, and featured in developmental-biology literature under the term “the introspective frog”. Studies suggest that during embryonic growth the normal eye-placement process was disrupted so severely that the eyes ended up in the mouth region. Apparent causes include aberrant regulation of eye-development genes or extreme parasitic influence—but there is no definitive cause yet.
