En octubre de 1934 el PSOE y la UGT lideraron una insurrección armada contra el gobierno legítimo de la República. En Asturias miles de mineros organizados y armados tomaron cuarteles, ayuntamientos y asesinaron a más de un centenar de religiosos, civiles y militares. La Catedral de Oviedo fue saqueada, la Cámara Santa volada con dinamita, monjas violadas, sacerdotes ejecutados.
